Things To Do
The central position of
Perrou makes it an ideal centre for exploring this part
of France. There are many small towns and villages each
with its own charm. In particular Les Villages Fleuri,
who put on the most wonderful floral displays in the
summer are well worth visiting, Especially the village
of St. Fraimbault which is a previous winner of the 'grand
prix national de fleurissement'. Here also you will find
a lake with fishing, and pedalos, also tennis and mini-golf.
This is also an area that prides itself on its calvados
cider and poire (perry), and it is possible to take a tour
around the area “tasting' as you go. If you happen
to be here in April you will enjoy the sight of the apple
and pear trees covered in blossom. The village of Mantilly
holds a Fete du Poire in July. Both Mantilly and St. Fraimbault
are just a few kilometres south of Domfront.
Information on the numerous footpaths and cycle routes
in both the forest and the local area is available either
from ourselves or from the local tourist information centre
in Domfront. Cycles are available for hire in Domfront.
In the village of Juvigny-sous-Andaine (our neighbouring
village) you will find 'La Ferme du Cheval de Trait' which
has a miniature farm and hosts a 'Spectacle de Percherons'
a show featuring the horses of Northern France such as
Percherons in a display including bareback riding, team
riding and chariot racing.
If you are a horse lover you must also take the opportunity
to visit Haras du Pin, (about an hour away). Here you will
find part of the French National Stud, with around 70 stallions.
The stables are open every day and demonstrations of horsemanship
are regular features during the summer months.
In the small town of Ferte Mace, close to Bagnoles-de-L'Orne,
there is a leisure lake, with a small beach with pedalos.
Here too there is fishing, tennis and horse riding. Ferte
Mace also has a toy museum.
To the north of us is the area known as 'Suisse
Normande'. Here you will find spectacular scenery
as well as the more rugged pursuits of climbing and canoeing.
For the children in your party (of all ages) there is 'The
Enchanted Village' with Noah's Ark and his
animals, a little train, the Valley of fairy tales, and
much more. This lies a few kilometres to the west of Domfront.
There are several zoos within easy reach including the
Zoo De Jurques, and the Zoo de Champrepus, which also prides
itself on its gardens.
We hope that keen gardeners will enjoy our garden, but
there are other gardens that are well worth a visit. The
Parc Floral de Haute Bretagne lies to the south west of
Domfront.
About an hour away is the enchanting Mont St Michel, just
north of which lies the seaside town of Granville.
Further afield, but still within range of a day trip are
the Normandy beaches and the Memorial of Caen, Paris, The
Palace of Versailles and Monet's garden.
All the towns have markets, some on more than one day
in the week. It is impossible to give more than a taster
of what is on offer, sufficient to say that there are leisure
pursuits available for most tastes, and much more than
you could visit in one week, so that you will almost certainly
wish to return to lovely Normandy .
